What Is TMJ Disorder?
TMJ disorder may also be referred to as TMJ dysfunction. This condition afflicts the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), which is located just in front of your ears. It controls movement of your lower jaw. When the joint suffers damage or inflammation, it can cause pain and a range of other unpleasant symptoms in the surrounding tissues. TMD may be caused by injuries, arthritis, teeth grinding, or other factors.
Symptoms of TMJ Disorder
TMD can cause dozens of symptoms. Some of the most common include:
- Tenderness and pain in the jaw and face.
- Difficulty chewing, especially when it comes to tough foods.
- Limited jaw mobility or the sensation of lockjaw.
- Pain in the back, neck, and shoulders.
- Clicking and popping noises when opening and closing the jaw.
- Ringing in the ears (tinnitus).
- Pain behind the eyes.
- Changes in the way the upper and lower teeth fit together.
Types of TMJ Treatment
Before recommending any specific treatment, our team will examine your teeth and jaw joint in an effort to determine the cause of your symptoms. After we gather adequate information, we can recommend your next steps. We might advise you to try some home remedies, such as modifying your diet or managing the level of stress in your life.
Additionally, we may determine that you are a good candidate for BOTOX injections.
BOTOX® Injections
While BOTOX is often seen as a cosmetic treatment, it is actually very useful for treating TMD. When it is strategically injected into the facial muscles, it can force them to relax. This can reduce stress on the TMJ and produce significant pain relief. The results may last for several months at a time.
