What Are Implant Dentures?

Implant dentures are precisely what they sound like—a set of dentures attached to a variety of dental implants. The prosthetic is adhered to a series of thin metal posts that are surgically placed into the jaw and allowed to fuse with the bone tissue.

This makes implant dentures considerably more stable than the traditional alternative. They’re also stronger, meaning that the foods that you’ll be able to eat will dramatically expand. Depending on what has been bothering you about your current dentures, putting them on dental implants could be just the solution for you.

Fixed/Permanent Implant Dentures

Fixed implant dentures are meant to stay attached to their dental implants permanently, only being removed with the help of a trained professional. This means that there’s no longer any need to remove your prosthetic to clean them, brushing them just like you would your teeth.

Fixed implant dentures are generally adhered to anywhere from four to six strategically placed metal posts.

Removable Implant Dentures

Removable implant dentures, sometimes called “snap-ons,” are able to be taken off at any time. They are attached to a series of dental implants via small clips, which means that they can be removed for cleaning.

This also puts slightly less strain on the jaw meaning that they can be secured in position with only two to five metal posts.

The Implant Denture Procedure

The first step of the process will be a consultation, where we’ll discuss whether this treatment is right for you and what kinds of preliminary treatment you may need. Once these are complete, the next step is the placement of the implants—this will be done by Dr. Martinez himself entirely in-house.

We’ll wait for a few months for the dental implants to heal and fuse with the jawbone, a process known as osseointegration. We’ll also take this time to design your prosthetic based on models of your mouth. Once it’s complete, we’ll connect them to the implants and you’ll have your brand-new smile!

Am I a Candidate for Implant Dentures?

Implant dentures might sound intimidating, but the procedure is actually fairly low-impact and complications can be accounted for. That means that most patients who come to us in fairly good oral health are eligible for implant dentures, regardless of their age.

Of course, there are some conditions that can add risk to the procedure—active gum disease or a degraded jaw may make getting implants much harder. We’ll therefore treat any oral health problems you have before beginning the treatment.

Benefits of Combining Dentures & Dental Implants

Implant dentures require a greater upfront time and monetary investment when compared to other prosthetics, but when you think in the long term, you’ll actually wind up more than making all of it back. These dentures are much more durable, making relines unnecessary and replacement much less frequent.

Moreover, implant dentures will allow you to eat foods that were previously unavailable to you, meaning a well-rounded diet and better overall health. Combine that with implant dentures stunning realism and they’re more than worth what you’ll pay for them.

If you have any questions about whether this method of tooth replacement could work for you, don’t hesitate to reach out to us for a consultation today!
