How to Combat Common Winter Mouth Issues

With winter here, it’s not uncommon to experience the ravages of cold weather throughout the body. This includes in and outside of your mouth. Here are a few ways that colder temperatures may be affecting your smile, and what you can do to protect yourself during these chillier months!

Chapped Lips

One of the most common ways your oral health can be affected by dry winter weather is chapped lips. The skin on your lips is very delicate, and thanks to lower levels of humidity in the air, it is easy for them to dry out and peel. To combat this, be sure to regularly apply a lip balm with an SPF. You should also increase your water intake to help keep your skin hydrated and your mouth fresh. A humidifier may also help increase moisture levels in your home.

Dry Mouth

Dry mouth, or xerostomia is caused by inadequate amounts of saliva in the mouth. This can happen if you are taking certain medications, cough frequently, or if you are mouth-breathing due to sinus congestion. The dry winter air may make this condition even worse, so be sure to stay hydrated and speak to your dentist about prescribing a hydrating mouthwash to help.

Sensitive Teeth

Tooth sensitivity can occur all year round, but it can be more pronounced in the winter due to both cold air and the increase in hot beverages many people drink to stay warm. It happens because broken down enamel can expose the dentin of your teeth, leaving them vulnerable to sensitivity from hot, cold, and acidic foods. Even cold air and wind can sometimes be felt in the teeth. If this sounds familiar, start with a sensitive toothpaste. If you don’t notice a reduction in sensitivity within about a week, schedule a dentist appointment to be safe. Often, cavities or infections can become more painful during colder months, so it’s best to rule out any problems before they get worse!

Remember, the winter weather takes its toll on more than just your fingers and toes! It can also cause many painful problems for your lips, teeth, and gums. If you are experiencing any negative side effects of cold weather, try these tips, or contact your dentist for help.
