Like most people, you understand that brushing with toothpaste is important for maintaining healthy teeth. But with the nearly endless variety of toothpastes at your local pharmacy, how can you be sure that you’re using the right one? While no singular type of toothpaste is a perfect fit for everyone, some kinds are better at meeting your unique needs. Read on as your dentist in Indianapolis discusses the most common types of toothpaste so that you can make the best decision for your smile!

Whitening

Several kinds of toothpastes on the market claim to remove surface stains when used daily. Although these products may sound tempting, it’s worth mentioning that many of them contain abrasive ingredients that wear down the enamel of the teeth in addition to the stains. This may eventually lead to painful sensitivity, so consider using an alternative if you already have sensitive teeth.

Sensitivity

If hot or cold temperatures send a sharp discomfort through your teeth, you’ll be happy to know that there is a specific type of toothpaste meant to bring relief. Desensitizing toothpaste contains a compound that blocks the microscopic pores in the enamel that lead to the nerves in the center of the tooth. As a result, you won’t feel nearly as sensitive to extreme temperatures.

Keep in mind that toothpaste for sensitive teeth may not start working right away. It may take up to four weeks of daily use to feel the full effects, but the relief you’ll feel will be worth it!

Tartar Control

A thin film made of bacteria and food debris – known as plaque – is constantly forming on the teeth. You can get rid of it when you brush and floss each day, but if you don’t, then plaque will harden into a substance called tartar. Only a dental professional can remove tartar, meaning you’ll have a higher risk of tooth decay and gum disease until you can see your dentist.

Fortunately, some types of toothpaste are specifically designed to minimize the chances of tartar forming. Often, they’ll contain an antibiotic compound that reduces the harmful bacteria in the mouth, minimizing plaque buildup.

Fluoride

No matter which variety of toothpaste you choose, always make sure that it contains fluoride. This valuable mineral is proven to lower the risk of cavities by strengthening the enamel. Luckily, fluoridated toothpaste isn’t hard to find; in fact, odds are the toothpaste you already have at home contains fluoride. One easy trick to determine whether a toothpaste has fluoride is to look for the American Dental Association (ADA) Seal of Approval on the label. This means the product has been deemed safe and effective at maintaining healthy teeth; it also indicates that toothpaste is fluoridated.

With so many kinds of toothpaste to choose from, make sure you pick the right one that meets your needs. Of course, your dentist would be happy to recommend the products that will best suit your unique smile!
