Can Dental Implants Discolor?
June 24, 2022
A dental implant is unlike any other tooth replacement method because it recreates both the root and crown. A titanium post is placed into the jawbone to mimic a root while an abutment connects a custom-made restoration to the implant. Although it will closely look and feel like a real tooth, it isn’t vulnerable to stains like your natural smile. However, dental implants can still discolor if you aren’t careful. Here’s how you can keep your investment looking its best.
Do Dental Implants Stain?
Most restorations for dental implants are made of ceramic porcelain, which is stain-resistant. While they aren’t vulnerable to discoloration from drinking too much coffee or enjoying a bowl of blueberries, they can lose their shine if you aren’t careful. Abrasive dental products can strip the shiny coating off their surfaces, which can make them look discolored. Therefore, it is best to use a soft-bristled toothbrush and nonabrasive toothpaste to keep your smile clean.
Although it is unlikely your restorations will change color with the proper care, the bonding material used to hold them in place is susceptible to stains. The edges of the implants can change color over time if you aren’t cautious.
Caring for Your Dental Implants
You’ll care for dental implants like you would your natural teeth to keep infections at bay and safeguard their appearance. You can protect your investment by following a few simple tips:
- Commit to Your Oral Hygiene: Besides preventing stains, the long-term success of dental implants relies on your oral health. You can keep your mouth healthy and your dental implants looking their best by brushing at least twice per day. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and gentle toothpaste to clean your teeth for 2 minutes. Use high-quality dental floss to clean between each tooth and around your dental implants every night. Consider adding a daily mouthwash to kill any bacteria left behind by brushing and flossing.
- Avoid Tobacco: Smoking can cause tar and nicotine to stain your teeth. Not to mention, tobacco affects your body’s ability to health and fight infections, increasing your risk of dental implant failure. It’s best to kick the habit to ensure nothing compromises your new smile.
- Limit Stain-Causing Foods: Although your dental implants are resistant to stains, any natural teeth can discolor. Dark foods and drinks can turn your teeth brown or yellow, causing color discrepancies. You can preserve seamless results by limiting your consumption of stain-causing foods and beverages, like coffee, tea, and berries.
Don’t forget to visit your dentist every 6 months for a cleaning and checkup. They’ll keep your smile looking its best while ensuring your dental implants thrive for a lifetime.
