Halloween isn’t here yet, but it’s not too soon to prep for Thanksgiving. Turkey Day can take weeks of preparation; you must arrange meals, family activities, etc. In fact, now is a good time to consider smile-friendly Thanksgiving desserts so the holiday doesn’t ruin your teeth. Your Indianapolis dentist will even share a few you could add to your final setup for November. So, read on to learn Thanksgiving treats that don’t cause damage to your mouth.

Dark Chocolate

Chocolate is often known for being sugary and for rotting teeth. However, darker kinds are fairly safe and won’t harm your oral health on Thanksgiving.

You see, dark chocolate isn’t all that bad for your teeth and gums. It doesn’t cling to your mouth as much because (unlike milk-based kinds) it melts quickly. Similarly, it uses less sugar than other types; it doesn’t attract that many harmful bacteria that could harm your smile.

Rice Pudding

Would you like an equally sweet substitute for ice cream on Thanksgiving? If so, you should seriously look into rice pudding.

Compared to other desserts, rice pudding has less sugar and fewer calories. You can trust that it won’t erode your teeth as much as more traditional sweets would. Plus, you can make the pudding at home to further control its sugar content. It’s even possible to use sweet substitute ingredients like cinnamon!

Specialty Cheeses

Aside from being tasty, another perk of specialty cheese is that it’s mouth-healthy. Serving it as a Thanksgiving dessert would improve your family’s oral health.

It comes down to how cheeses – specialty-based or not – protect your teeth. Due to their high calcium levels, eating them helps your enamel regain lost minerals. The overall effect is that they reduce your risk of cavities, tooth infections, etc. Given such benefits, you’d be wise to switch out the pies and cakes for some specialty cheeses.

Apple Crisp

An apple crisp is a very fitting dessert for the Thanksgiving holidays. That said, what makes it truly great is that it’s friendly to your teeth and gums.

Apple crisps rely on ingredients that aren’t very harmful to oral health. After all, calcium-rich walnuts don’t decay your enamel; you shouldn’t bite them too hard. An apple crisp’s oatmeal and maple syrup toppings also aren’t too dangerous. So long as you don’t go overboard with them, they’ll make the dessert sweet and festive.
